I signed up a while ago to be part of the Joost beta program and I've really enjoyed the experience. Originally known under its code name of "The Venice Project", Joost has been a quiet silicon valley startup from the founders of Skype and Kazaa (Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis), attracting top talent and funding. With an ambitious goal of combining the best of TV with the best of the internet, Joost beta is now available with 149 channels.
These channels really run the gamut and include the fun stuff (Comedy Central, "adult swim" cartoons), educational (The Hobby Channel, 4 National Geographic Channels), sports ("The Soccer Channel, 2 Poker Channels, 2 Indy Car Racing Channels), Entertainment (The Silent Movies Channel, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Channel), Music (Rhino Records, 3 MTV Channels, VH1) and a whole bunch more.
I was asked to register some basic demographic data so my viewing habits could be watched and appropriate advertising targeted, which reminded me of my days as a Nielsen TV participant over 10 years ago. So much for perfect privacy, but I am, after all, getting Joost for free.
The features that go beyond basic TV were pretty cool, including live chat with more features are on the way. Advertising was not too intrusive and the targeting will certainly get more focused over time. The only downside is a server response time problem that Joost has recognized and discussed pretty openly in their blog.
